Putty must be configured to enable X11 forwarding, which is done inside Putty by going to SSH>X11 and ticking 'Enable X11 forwarding'. Then start PuTTY open the 'My Documents' folder and double click on the 'putty' icon. In my opinion, Xming works best with the Putty and comes with it. Start Xming and PuTTY: Start the X-Window server Xming first (Start -> All Programs -> Xming -> Xming). Using X11 tunneling, many things can easily be done remotely, whether that be word processing, file-sharing or accessing an email client. Basically, using Xming, a graphical program, like Firefox or xeyes, can be run remotely from an SSH server with X11.
Xming configuration windows#
Xming is an X server for Windows which can be used to secure forward X11 sessions from Unix machines. On Windows, it is somewhat more challenging. Configure your SSH client program to forward X11 connections (if not done previously) See PuTTY SSH client if you don’t have an SSH client installed on your PC. Most Linux distributions, and OS X, have built-in X11 support and to connect to a computer and be able to run graphical programs remotely, ssh server -x is the only command which must be typed. Xming icon will appear at the bottom right of your screen.

When configuration is needed, the Xorg server gathers configuration details from nf the Xorg server configuration file /etc/X11/ directory. Conceptually, it 'looks' for graphical output from a Linux command (which WSL wont understand) and converts that output into something Windows can display. The Xorg server is designed to configure automatically and can run in most situations without the need to edit configuration files. A friend recently introduced me to the idea of X11 tunnelling, which is accessing programs over SSH whilst still maintaining a graphical interface. In this section, I will provide a step-by-step for installing the Xming program, which will act as our X server.
